Banff & Buchan MSP Stewart Stevenson will meet with Grampian Fire & Rescue Service officials over concerns that Peterhead Fire Station is being left without full-time cover for three and a half hours each day on Friday 9 June at 2.30pm at Peterhead Fire Station.
Mr Stevenson will meet with Peter Murray, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Grampian and Gordon Moir, Area Manager.
GFRS wants members of its Peterhead crews to spend their mornings raising awareness of fire prevention methods within the community. Retained firefighters provide cover during the hours between 8.30am and noon.
Commenting, Mr Stevenson said:
“I fully agree that it is a worthwhile initiative to spend time with local children and to take action to prevent fires before they start – but this should be done in a way that ensures adequate coverage of the area remains in place.
“I have had discussions with fire personnel regarding their concerns and will be bringing these up at my meeting tomorrow.
“What I certainly don’t want to see is an increase in response times as a result of these initiatives and that is something that I will be emphasising at my meeting. Our firefighters work in sometimes very dangerous conditions and they deserve our full support in the job that they do.”
