STEVENSON WELCOMES INQUIRY INTO SUPERMARKETS
Banff & Buchan MSP Stewart Stevenson has welcomed the announcement by the Competition Commission that the treatment of farmers and producers by multinational supermarkets along with the viability of the supply chain will be at the forefront of its inquiry.
Commenting Mr Stevenson said:
“I welcome the announcement by the Competition Commission as it is widely recognised that many suppliers are suffering from an uneven relationship with the big supermarkets. Some supermarkets are squeezing producers dry to maximise already huge profits. Large supermarket chains have suppliers over a barrel and farmers are struggling to stay afloat as they are bullied into accepting rock bottom prices for their goods.”
“Quality is suffering as supermarkets strive to provide cheaper products and ultimately the consumers will feel the effects as they are faced with less choice and quality. I would hope as a result of the inquiry that this trend can be reversed with consumers receiving high quality products at reasonable prices and farmers getting a fair price for their goods.”
