Seven of the eight members walked away from the administration on Monday.
The move was made following a row over the authority’s senior management structure and disagreement over how best to modernise the council.
Moray Council had been run by a coalition of Tories and Independents until yesterday.
Commenting, Stewart Stevenson MSP said:
“A majority of Tory councillors walked out of the Moray Council administration which is no surprise. Running a local council, and the challenges that exist in doing so, were obviously too much for Councillors who are more used to simply opposing a second independence referendum.
“Moray needs a stable and effective administration as it deals with a number of challenges and needs representative that puts the needs of the people and communities first, led by principle, leadership and vision.”
