The campaign has seen 37 environmental charities from across Scotland coming together to ‘Fight for Scotland’s Nature’ and gather support for a Scottish Environment Act.
The North-east MSP added his support following growing uncertainty of the threat Brexit has to current EU environmental protections that enhance Scotland’s nature.
At a time when 1 in 11 species in Scotland are at risk of extinction, environmental charities are calling for a Scottish Environment Act to set clear ambitions for Scotland’s own environmental policy and set a clear trajectory towards a more sustainable future, particularly in the approach to 2020, a year critical for the culmination of global efforts to halt biodiversity loss.
“The joint emergencies of rapid biodiversity loss and climate breakdown require transformative action. As a member of the Scottish Parliament, I have added my pledge to stand up for nature.
“I will do everything in my power to ensure Scotland’s natural environment has strong and effective protection, alongside ambitious targets for its recovery and enhancement.
“When 1 in 11 species in Scotland is at risk of extinction, these measures are vital, whatever our future relationship with the European Union.”
